Now you can use 3 types of authentication: standard, challenge/ response or using cookies from IE.
For other sites based on LiveJournal code new login options might not work (until they update their code) returning "Invalid password" or "No username sent" errors (and keep in mind that challenge/response auth via web and via client are different i.e. if your site supports it via web that does not mean the client will start to work with it).
Read more in context help for login window (press F1).

If you are a new user it may be useful for you to open Options to see what is available there because some options are initially disabled (for example, loading/saving drafts etc.)

Reminder about setting displayed font: if you go to View/Set font when some text is selected the font settings (name and color) will appear in your journal. If you did not select anything it will be applied to display font (size, weight, underline, color) and will not appear in your journal entry.

Mood list and tab order are now loaded from .ini files so you can manually alter them (activation of new mood list does not delete standard one which is loaded during login so when you turn off custom moods the previous list is restored). For now only Russian mood list is supplied (it's not an exact translation of English one, actually not a translation at all, it was taken from ru_slang community). If you create a mood list for your own language you can send it to me to make it available for other users.

General reminder (rather offtopic but many of you do not know it and blame on Semagic):
when installing Windows (even latest XP), make sure you also installed drivers for your chipset, videocard and directX (all such drivers are usually shipped on a CD with computer, not through windows update). If in Control panel/ System/Device manager you see a lot of yellow question marks (or, for example, your disk is detected as Generic drive type 47) that means that those devices are not detected because your OS does not support it or its advanced functions (like ATA controllers etc.) This significantly affects overall performance of the system and may also cause Semagic to crash or work very slowly.
Of course, all these upgrades are not required, but some of you have been reporting that Semagic crashes frequently and it turned out that in fact it is due to videocard drivers not installed etc.

For some reason when I make a post, Semagic is always popping up a box that asks if I'd like to check for an update to it. I have to click 'no' every time, and then it'll post my LJ entry. I have looked all over the program to see if there's an option to turn this function off - I really don't want to be reminded about updates every time I make an LJ post, as I post several times a day. Is there any way to tell it *not* to pop up that notification window?

options/general Check for updates (if it's negative it will check all the time). to disable popup check "Silent"

Windows XP SP2 Compatibility - No Go

For some reason Semagic does not appear to work under the Windows XP Service Pack 2 environment. This is a rather clean and updated install of XP (installed via a slipstreamed CD as of last weekend), with all the latest drivers for *everything*.

Semagic boots up, when I attempt to login it claims there is an error contacting the server and then the client crashes completely.

If you wish for more information or would like to probe my comp, I'd be more than accessible to assist with the crash bug and error :) Just let me know.

Re: Windows XP SP2 Compatibility - No Go

it appears a frequent problem with sp2 as you can see in previous entries here and comments. the only solution for you is to use visiual studio and debug it yourself because sp2 does not want to install on my computer and also for some people it works (from the poll in the 1st entry)

I don't know if this is something that's possible or not, I'm just being picky. :P

I post a whole lot of sports articles to certain communities I'm in. When doing so, the spellcheck catches players names and so on as wrongly spelled and I have to hit "leave" 100 times to post the article.

What I was wondering was if it would be at all possible to add a "skip all" button or something similar to the spell checker that would simply skip all misspelled words in the post.

I know I could just shut off auto spellcheck before posting each article, but a "skip all" button would be much simpler. :P

Friends filter isn't working!

Under View-->Options-->Friends, I have it set to only notify when a certain friends group updates. I also have the "add ?filter= to friends page URL" box checked. However, when I right-click and chose "What are my friends doing?", it still takes me to my main Friends page instead of taking me to that specific filter...

any advice?

Re: Friends filter isn't working!

you have to be loggend in to see non-public friend group, if it does not help ask in /support/

Re: Feature Suggestion

the frequency of usage of polls does not worth the time to implement. you can do it yourself if you want.

Problems with Semagic

Sorry if this is an inappropriate place to ask these questions, but I wasn't certain where else to go.

I, or rather some of my friends, have noticed odd characters in my posts - I'm not sure when it started, but it's been happening the last few versions of Semagic, perhaps even since you went to rtf. They see ctrl-k characters at the ends of lines, which seem to be caused by use of the return key in Semagic. IE users don't appear to see these characters, only non-IE users.

Is there anything I can do to stop this, other than not using my return key when typing into the client? (I like new lines for new bits of text; otherwise it comes out as one huge lump of text, which is confusing.)

Are there plans to offer a version of Semagic with all the frills, but which doesn't use rtf? (I prefer the old method of a plain ol' notepad-like text area.)

Problems with Semagic, Part II

Apparently this is not happening for all users of Semagic. It may only be happening to me. A friend using is not having this problem. I'm using the newest 1.4 beta currently; but as I said, it's been happening for several versions now.

Well, I had a problem, and I didnt really know where to ask it, so I'm just gonna ask here and risk getting yelled at ;)

When I open the client, dont auto format, remove comment, dont email comments, and backdate entry are all checked. I tried unchecking them and saving it as the default settings, but when I restart its the same way again.

Also, whenever I post an entry I get this message:
This entry contains itemid field.
Post it to replace entry with this ID? (other wise as a new entry?)

with yes, no and cancel as the options.
When I click no, it posts it, but without formatting.
When I click yes, it doesnt post it.
Cancel cancels the operation.

I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and both keeping my settings, and deleteing them at the end of the uninstall.
I really hope you can help me.

PS-I love you client, its the best. :D

delete draft or disable it's auto load

Could you implement a photo upload feature? Like, send this picture to FTP and insert it (from the url not local) into the edit pane?

im sry but i am totally confused on where to go to download the semagic program plz direct to where i need to go?

well, hey... I was wondering if you could add itunes for windows support to this program, seeing as I love semagic and itunes both dearly... thanks.

itunes show very good attitude: it is not available for 9x. Should i support such attitude? (and also if there was a way to easily make it i whould have done already. you can make a patch yourself if you think it's easy.)

Hope that helps anyway - feel free to get in touch with me if you want more info or a complete disassembly.

Bug: "Detect Music Now" and Winamp Classic 2.81

Whenever I am writing, and I click on Detect Music Now, invariably it brings up what the Song Name would be if it was scrolling in Winamp. I have song name scrolling turned OFF in Winamp, so most times I have to add in what the scrolling cuts off in Semagic.

Re: Bug: "Detect Music Now" and Winamp Classic 2.81

try to update winamp

i've been getting two bugs with the latest versions of semagic. i'm now using 1.408 on a japanese language version windows xp service pack 2.

1. if i make a mixed japanese/english post, or attempt to edit one made elsewhere (usually through the web interface when it wasn't working through semagic), it tells me "Client error: Invalid text encoding: The text entered is not a valid UTF-8 stream". i don't get this problem with the same text through the web interface, or with the 'stable' version of semagic.. i'm not just using that because i want to use the in-built spellchecker.

2. i recently added a friend with a name which wasn't in an english character set [nihongo_only]. now when i click "update from server" in the friends dialog it tells me "Decoding error. Warning -some data may be corrupted, apply to program author".

hopefully this is enough information for you to find the problem(s)..

activate Debug option and send me response and request files when you try to post or edit entry posted via web. (for exacttly the same text). read comments here about this option
